Apple Intercom with HomePod, iPhone and Apple watch walkthrough

Apple intercom HomePod Iphone walkthrough

Along with the HomePod Mini, Apple also showed off a new feature for iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and HomePod, called Intercom. This new feature has been billed an easy way to communicate with your family. I have been playing with this feature for the last couple of days and is a guide on how to set it up and how to use it across your Apple devices and my first thoughts.

Get started

To use the Apple Intercom feature, your Apple devices need to be running the correct firmware. Intercom requires you to be iOS 14.2 on your iPhone, watchOS 7.2 on Apple Watch, and HomePod mini 14.2. These updates are in beta at the moment, but Apple should launch them soon.

Unfortunately, at present, it doesn’t appear that the feature works on the Mac. Although to be fair to Apple, they didn’t say Mac would support it. But I could imagine this changing later down the line.

I also want to point out that this is beta and I will not be commenting on any of the bugs as that would be unfair. But right now, it’s working pretty well and I am sure Apple will improve things before the official launch.

  1. Hello Jon,

I am a recent subscriber and thoroughly enjoy your content … especially your Youtube content. I am a newbie HomeKit enthusiast just getting started with the purchase of two mini homepods. I used my wife’s Apple iPhone 10X to set it up as she is a stay at home grandmother as I am still working outside the home. Setup was as easy as you said … I just can’t figure out how to get Siri to recognize my voice along with hers. As I said I am a total newbie at this stuff and may need to enlist the help of our grandkids … lol. We both have iPhones and iPads as well. So five Apple (Macbook Laptop also) devices in the house with her phone for the mini homepod/HomeKit setup.
