Apple is reportedly developing two smart display devices set to run on a new operating system that has been long rumored, called homeOS, according to a recent article from Mark Gurman.
In his newsletter, Gurman shares that Apple is making another play in the smart home market with new smart home devices that will HomeOS. The standout product in development, code-named J595, is a tabletop device featuring a robotic arm and a large display, much like an oversized iPad. Additionally, Apple is working on a more affordable smart display, known as J490, designed for FaceTime calls and controlling smart home devices.
The lower-cost smart display could be hitting shelves as early as next year, while the more advanced robotic arm device isn’t expected to debut until 2026 or 2027, with a price tag likely to exceed $1,000.
Apple is said to be using tvOS as the foundation for the new ‘homeOS’. Gurman predicts that, eventually, tvOS and homeOS will merge, powering all of Apple’s smart home products. HomeOS was first mentioned just before WWDC21 in a job posting before being quickly removed by Apple. Since then very little has been leaked on the new operating rumored to power Apples smart home devices.
These devices are reportedly a collaboration between Apple’s AI and home device engineering teams. The budget-friendly smart display is expected to support apps like Calendar, Notes, and Home, with an interface optimised for managing home devices and at-a-glance updates. Early prototypes even featured a magnetic design for attaching to walls or standing on a desk.
The device, which may sport a square display and support hand gesture controls from a distance. It could offer Personal Requests, run apps, stream media, and act as an AirPlay receiver. Plus, it might come with a customisable Lock Screen, complete with a variety of clock faces.
