Apple is gearing up to unveil its highly anticipated Smart Home Hub, but a new report by Mark Gurman suggests consumers might face a longer wait before it’s available.

Codenamed J490, the device is expected to be revealed as early as March. Designed to serve as a home command centre, it boasts a square iPad-like design with a thick bezel, top-mounted camera, built-in rechargeable battery, and internal speakers. Available in Silver and Black, the device has reportedly been in development for about three years, with Apple CEO Tim Cook prioritising its creation.

In his latest newsletter, Gurman highlights that the Smart Home Hub’s deep integration with iOS 18.4 and iOS 19 could delay its shipping timeline.

The 7-inch smart display will allow users to manage household tasks, run apps, and make video calls. It can be mounted on a wall or placed on countertops, making it versatile for various home setups. However, its new operating system, codenamed Pebble, is closely tied to features in the upcoming iOS updates, which might push back its consumer release.

Looking beyond the Smart Home Hub, Apple is preparing to roll out significant innovations after 2025. These include an advanced, conversational Siri powered by cutting-edge AI and a range of privacy-focused smart home accessories. Expected in 2026, these accessories include an in-home security camera and a Face ID-enabled digital doorbell, both designed to work seamlessly with the revamped Siri.
