Aqara, the popular Chinese smart home company, has announced the Aqara G2H Pro. As with the original G2H, the Aqara G2H Pro works with HomeKit Secure Video and can act as a Zigbee hub.
Although the G2H Pro looks identical to the original G2H, it features some subtile differences. The Aqara G2H features a 1080p camera with night vision and 146 FOV. The G2H Pro supports SD cards up to 512GB, which is a step up from the original at just 128GB. Like the original, the Pro can act as a Zigbee 3.0 Aqara hub and can also support 128 child devices, compared to 64.
Aqara has equipped the G2H pro with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and it supports WPA3. In terms of power, the camera still uses a Micro-USB connection for power.
As with the original model, the G2H Pro supports HomeKit and HomeKit Secure Video. Which means it supports secure end-to-end encryption and iCloud storage. Which Includes a 10-day recording history, custom Activity Zones and people, pets, cars or package detection. All of this is possible if you are using a HomeKit hub and the relevant iCloud account. Additionally, the G2H Pro supports two-way audio via the Home and Aqara Apps.
Finally, the Aqara G2H Pro will support NAS storage that uses the samba protocol, but you need to have an SD card inserted into the camera. The Aqara G2H also has a advanced privacy masking feature that can prevent certain parts of the image from being sent to third party servers.
HomeKit Authoritys take
Aqara is a major player in the smart home space and produces solid HomeKit devices, and the original G2H performs well. While it’s great to see Aqara back with the G2H Pro with some additional features that may need additional hardware. Its a shame that the device does not support USB-C and 5GHz Wi-Fi. I would also be interested to see if the privacy masking feature makes its way to the original model.
The bottom line, if you are looking for a solid HomeKit camera, then the G2H Pro is a decent upgrade. But if you want to save some cash, then the original G2H is more than capable.
