Matter 1.2 with support for robot vacuums, washing machines

The Connectivity Standards Alliance launched Matter 1.4, a major update now available to device manufacturers and platform providers. This latest version includes a host of new features that enable smoother user experiences across smart home ecosystems, enhanced network capabilities, broader energy management support, and compatibility with additional device types.

Matter-Certified Routers and Access Points

Matter 1.4 empowers devices such as routers, modems, and set-top boxes to better support smart home setups. With the introduction of Matter-certified Home Routers and Access Points (HRAP), these devices can now offer both Wi-Fi access and a Thread Border Router capability. This improved infrastructure simplifies network setup by securely storing and sharing Thread credentials, making it easier to integrate new devices and reduce network fragmentation.

Improved Multi-Admin Capabilities for Streamlined Device Management

Multi-Admin, a feature allowing Matter devices to operate across different ecosystems, now offers enhanced functionality. Users can now give single-instance consent to enable device sharing across multiple platforms, removing the need for repeated authorisations. Developers can adopt this streamlined consent mechanism based on specific needs, helping users seamlessly manage devices across ecosystems.

Energy Management Features for New Device Types

With a growing interest in energy-conscious technologies, Matter 1.4 extends its energy management capabilities. The update now supports energy-efficient integration with a wider range of device types—including solar panels, heat pumps, batteries, and water heaters—enhancing previous energy reporting functions for smarter automation.

Support for Diverse Energy Devices

Solar Devices: Matter 1.4 now includes compatibility with solar inverters and panel arrays.

Batteries: This update introduces support for battery walls and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which can balance energy usage between home and grid.

Heat Pumps: These can now adapt their energy use based on demand, with options to shift activity to off-peak periods.

Water Heaters: Users can set water heaters to preferred temperatures or usage levels, with an override option for quick heating.

EV Charging Equipment (EVSE): EVSE now allows users to set custom charging times, making it easy to charge at cost-effective or convenient hours.

Thermostats: With enhanced scheduling and preset modes, thermostats can now adjust based on motion detection or calendar events.

Device Energy Management Mode: This feature lets devices schedule operations in line with energy forecasts, allowing flexible energy management across the grid, locally, or device-specifically.

Expanded Control with Mounted On/Off and Dimmable Load Features

Matter 1.4 also introduces new options for in-wall switches to control lighting, fans, and other wired systems. These options offer a more user-friendly interface, expanding automation possibilities within the home.

Enhanced Occupancy Sensing and Sensor Accuracy

Updated occupancy sensor capabilities include radar, vision, and ambient sensing options. With adjustable sensitivity settings and more accurate reporting, these sensors can provide a refined sensing experience.

Optimised Battery Performance for Low-Power Devices

For battery-powered and intermittently connected devices, Matter 1.4 introduces the Long Idle Time (LIT) and Check-In protocols. These updates enable reliable communication for low-power devices, such as switches and sensors, improving battery life and network efficiency.
