Eve has announced the availability of Thread support for the HomeKit exclusive second-generation Eve Aqua. The firmware is now available via the Eve app and continues on the run of promises from the company of updating existing devices with Thread.
The Eve Aqua is a smart water controller that attaches to any outdoor water faucet. By doing so gives the user the ability to control the flow of water, which is useful for sprinkler systems. You can also include the Eve Aqua in automations and scenes to apply timers of when water can flow.
While the update brings Thread support to the Eve Aqua, because it is a battery-powered device. It cannot act as a Thread router and only an end point. But despite this, Thread support will benefit a HomeKit accessory like this because we normally Bluetooth coverage in the garden is restricted. It is also worth noting that only the 2nd generation Eve Aqua will get this update, as this device is the only one with the Thread-capable chipset inside.
Eve Thread support is growing
Eve has been working on updating its devices with Thread-capable chipsets. The first being the Eve Door and Window sensor getting the update. Since then, Eve has released the Eve Weather with Thread support. Then starting April we should see the all new Eve Energy with Thread support arriving in the US and UK.
Speaking of the Eve Energy, because it is a permanent mains powered device it can act as a Thread Router. Meaning it can extend the range for accessories like the Eve Aqua when placed between the Eve Aqua and a HomePod mini.
