HomeOS for HomeKit

A newly filed U.S. trademark for the name “HOMEOS” is sparking fresh speculation that Apple is preparing to launch a dedicated operating system for its smart home devices. The application, uncovered by Parker Ortolani, was submitted in April 2025—just weeks before Apple’s annual developer conference—hinting that an official announcement could be imminent.

The filing comes from “Home Operations Suite LLC,” a likely shell company Apple is using to mask its involvement—an approach the tech giant frequently uses to discreetly secure new product names. Interestingly, the U.S. application traces back to an earlier trademark registered in Liechtenstein in October 2024, a known tactic Apple employs to avoid early detection.

The trademark spans two international classes:

  • Class 009 covers downloadable software and application development tools, including APIs.

  • Class 042 includes software design, development, maintenance, and technical support services.

Together, these categories make one thing clear—“HOMEOS” is meant to be a full-fledged software platform, likely an operating system.

This development lands amid growing rumors about Apple’s next smart home push. Reports suggest the company has been working on a smart home hub with a display, although it’s allegedly delayed due to ongoing issues with Siri. There’s also buzz about a more advanced AI-powered tabletop robot featuring a robotic arm. A standalone operating system like “homeOS” could serve as the unifying layer across Apple’s expanding lineup of home devices.

While previous leaks before have pointed to towards a release. This is the first time filings for the trademark HomeOS have appeared. With WWDC just around the corner, we may not have to wait long to find out.
