After months of leaks and speculation, the Ikea Dirigera hub has been announced via the Verge that will be Matter ready. The new hub from Ikea will act as a Thread Border router and have a whole new App.

The new Ikea Dirigera hub is 2.7cm high with an 11.2cm diameter, making it much smaller than the original Tradfri hub. The new hub is fitted with an Ethernet port and a USB-C jack for power. Inside the hub it will have 3 radios for Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Thread, allowing it to act as a Thread border router. However, it is unclear if this will be a Thread Border Router for HomeKit.

Ikea is also planning on allowing the Dirigera hub to connect to your home internet router over 2.4GHz / 5GHz Wi-Fi, in addtion to Ethernet. Although, they said Ethernet will only be available at launch.

Ikea also plans to release a whole new app that will work with the Dirigera hub that promises to make the onboarding of devices a lot more user friendly. They will also design the new app to make interacting with devices smoother and more user friendly. But owners of the Trådfri gateway cannot use the new app coming in October.

They have released no pricing and no upgrade option will be available for existing Tradfri hub users. But Ikea promises that existing devices will work with the new Dirigera hub and the transfer process should be seamless.
